Day 323 – Good Night Sun

Today was the second day without rain around here, so we decided to drive to the outlet mall close to Columbus.  It was such a beautiful day…topped off by this beautiful sunset.  Macy took this one for me, as I was driving.  SOOC.

Day 322 – Redbud, Really?

Congratulations to the winners of April’s FabFoto Contest!

Here is one of the photos that I entered…and a special thanks to my amazing friend Tammy for enlightening me about different colored redbuds.  This is the Cercis canadensis ‘Alba’.  And it’s SOOC.  🙂

Day 321 – Hello Blue Sky!

I couldn’t help but take a photo of the beautiful blue sky and puffy white clouds today.  I mean it’s only been weeks (yes…weeks!) since we’ve seen either.  We’ve had over 13 inches of rain here in the N KY since April 1, and more is predicted before April is over.  So yeah, the blue sky was kind of a big deal today.  🙂

My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the horrific tornadoes of the past few weeks.

Photo is SOOC.

Day 320 – Concrete Plant

Took a ride around to find something a little different, and stumbled upon this concrete materials plant.  Used Picnik to apply some HDR.

Day 319 – Eastern Redbud

The April FabFoto contest theme was Redbuds.  I took a drive out to the country to find some, but I found plenty then.  Contest results are not in yet, but I’ll keep you posted.  🙂

Photo taken in DeMossville, KY and is SOOC.

Day 318 – Christ Church Cathedral

It’s still raining here in the N KY.  As of this morning, we’ve gotten 11.32 inches of rain since April 1.  The next dry day they are forecasting is Friday.  Hoping that does not change…I miss my old friend sunshine.

Went back to the archives today and found this photo of the steeple at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Cincinnati.  Photo was taken on March 19, 2011 and is SOOC.

Day 317 – Happy Easter

In honor of Easter Sunday, and the reason we celebrate Easter, I am posting the poem “The Legend of the Dogwood Tree.”  Although the author is unknown, and there is no Biblical basis for the poem, it’s still a nice Easter story.  Hope you all have had a blessed Easter Sunday.

“In Jesus’ time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
‘Twas strong and firm its branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
“Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.
Slender and twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom’s center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember Me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected, this tree shall be
A reminder to all of my agony.”

Day 316 – Bluegrass

Tonight Macy and I went to see David Parmley and Continental Divide play.  My elementary school friend Kim, is married to the mandolin player, Randy Graham.  They live about 3 hours south of me, so when I found out they would be playing nearby, I had to go!  It’s so awesome to be reunited with some of the friends I went to school with.

Here’s Randy, tearing up the mandolin.  SOOC.

Day 315 – For the Love of Dogwoods

It’s been raining here for what seems like months.  The weather man said we won’t be rain free any day until next Thursday.  Bleh.

So here’s an SOOC photo I took a couple of days ago when the rain was taking a break.  I do love dogwoods.  🙂

Day 314 – Dandelion Wishes

When was the last time you picked a dandelion puff and made a wish as you blew the seeds?  I did today!

I’ve tried a few times recently to make an awesome dandelion puff photo.  I thought I had a pretty good one, then I saw this beauty of Sasi’s.  So today I went back to the drawing board and tried again.  I can’t top Sasi’s…it’s just too amazing!  But here’s my best attempt so far.

Day 313 – I Hear the Train a Comin’

As much as I want to post another flower photo today, I’m going to do something different.  🙂

We had some hellacious storms roll through the N KY last night.  Thankfully we did not have any damage here, but a town very close to us had some severe damage.  When I got to work this morning, we had no electricity.  We sat around until 11:30 when my boss told my department we could go home.

I drove around looking for something to photograph, and decided to stop at the Erlanger Depot to see what was going on there.  I have no idea what the correct railroad lingo is, (I learned a lot about trains from watching “Unstoppable,” but apparently my brain did not retain any of it) but there was an engine that was pushing several cars down the track a few hundred feet and then pulling them back to where he started.  I was quite amused with this because to an “outsider,” it appeared that the engineer just couldn’t make up his mind what he wanted to do.  So I watched that for a few minutes and was just about to leave when I heard a train whistle in the distance.  Why yes, Folsom Prison Blues did start playing in my head.  How’d you know?  🙂

Day 312 – Dogwood Bud

I absolutely love dogwoods.  They are by far my favorite tree.  Maybe it’s because they are so abundant in NC where I grew up.  That’s not the case here in the N KY, but I did catch this little bud, just getting ready to greet the world.  Photo is SOOC.

Day 311 – Macy’s Stargazer

You just never know where you’re going to find photo inspiration.  A quick trip to the grocery for some milk, and we happened upon these Stargazer lilies.

This photo was taken by my amazing daughter, Macy.  And it’s SOOC too!

Day 310 – Mom’s Lilacs

Today we visited Rob’s Mom and Dad, and Mom told me that her lilacs were blooming.  I have never photographed lilacs before, so I was pretty excited at this news!

Day 309 – Run Dusty Run!

I am posting a photo from earlier this week because I have been totally consumed with the tornadoes that have been moving across North Carolina today.  I moved here to KY from there in 1997 and still have family and friends there.

Thankfully I have been in touch with everyone and they are all OK.  Lots of property damage, but they are OK and that is all that matters.  Thank you God!

Just to clarify, this is not MY horse, it’s Macy’s…her dad got him for her.  But I did get to go visit him the other day.  🙂  So here are a couple of photos of Dusty.  He was so cute when he was running.

Day 308 – What’s the Buzz?

I am on a quest to find Eastern redbuds and dogwood trees that are blooming.  Working on another photo contest project.  So today, I stopped by the Florence Nature Park to see what was blooming there.  I was disappointed that I didn’t see either a redbud or a dogwood, but I did see this fabulous tree with pretty white blooms.  I stopped to get a few photos and along came this bee…the first one I’ve seen this season.  Ahh…spring is finally here!

As are most of my flower photos…this one is SOOC.  I can’t do this with the new Canon!  Can’t wait until we can afford a macro lens!  LOL!

Day 307 – Crabapple Bloom

This is a bloom from the crabapple tree in our backyard.  SOOC.

Day 306 – Dusty

I’ve had the past few days off to spend with Macy on her spring break.  Today, we went out to the country to see her horse, Dusty.  Photo is SOOC.

Day 305 – Striking

Today Macy and I had a girl’s day with some friends.  We went bowling, walked around the levee, and had some delicious Dewey’s Pizza for dinner.  Here’s a shot from today.  Other than a little crop, photo is SOOC.  I honestly don’t know if Macy took this or if I did, so we’ll split it.  🙂

Day 304 – Heavenly House

Today’s photo is from the archives because it’s been raining all day here and I didn’t get out in it to take a photo.  This is one of the fabulous churches in downtown Cincinnati.

Day 303 – Just After Take-off

Today Macy and I went to see Soul Surfer with our friend Jackie.  Great movie…you should go check it out.

Afterward, we stopped by Cold Stone Creamery for some very overpriced ice cream and some people watching.  While sitting outside enjoying the beautiful day, this DHL plane flew overhead and I couldn’t resist snapping a shot of the colors against that blue sky.  Photo is SOOC.

Day 302 – My Tulips!

These are the tulips in my very own flower bed.  Should you be excited about them?  Absolutely!  See…I have several tulip leaves that come up every spring.  But that’s all I get…just leaves.  No buds, no blooms. So this year, when this one had 3 buds, I was beside myself!  It has been so long since any of my tulips bloomed, that I had no idea what these would look like when they opened.  I don’t even remember buying bulbs that looked like this, but I”m not complaining.  They’re fabulous!

I did a small crop job, but other than that, SOOC.

Day 301 – Sunny Daffodil

I finally know what I want to be when I grow up!  A nature photographer.  Particularly, a flower photographer.  Yep, I finally know.  Now if only I figure out to make a living doing it!  🙂

I drove around a little after work and came across some beautiful daffodils.  Little background on me and my photos…I shoot way more photos than I will ever use.  I take one, and then another one right away, just in case the first one didn’t come out well, or was blurry or whatever.  (Yes, I do check the photos when I take them, but sometimes there are surprises when you actually put them on the computer.)  Then I take a ton more, changing the camera angle ever so slightly, or changing from portrait to landscape.  A simple photo shoot like today netted 75 photos.  Seriously.

So anyway, here’s 1 of 75.  🙂  And yes, it’s  SOOC.

Day 300 – Little Pink Blooms

Wow!  Day 300!  Seems like just yesterday Mindy was trying to coax me into the pool.  Time flies when you’re having fun, eh?  🙂

I saw this tree with beautiful pink blooms on my way home today.  Had to stop and grab a few shots.  Photo is SOOC.
